Especially for beginners this looks like the sound isn't working. As I started to use alsa, I didn't know I have to unmute my sound first and finally went back to OSS, as I knew that this worked. Later someone told me about this problem and I finally was able to use ALSA. Of course some distributions are doing some tricks to get sound enabled, but is this really a good solution. Let's look at the Ubuntu package diff against the original files: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/alsa-utils/alsa-utils_1.0.10-1ubuntu14.diff.gz Search for "sanify_levels_on_card()" there and you'll find a long list where they try to set default values. A long list noone would need if there would be a better default in ALSA. а также оттуда же: Possibly with the distribution packagers. I find alsaconf in Debian quite helpful - it sets default levels (un-muted) and reminds the user to adjust the levels in alsamixer or another sound mixer package. Может, и нам стоит перенять что-то из этого? Я-то уже привык, а вот новичкам часто действительно невдомёк, почему при загруженных модулях звука нет... 42151 1 mike 2006-11-13 19:04:56 +0300 С одной стороны, у нас в sound-scripts есть /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound::fix_alsa_levels() схожего толка; с другой -- с hotplug что-то сейчас сломано, поскольку у меня на ноуте после загрузки уровни оказываются нулевыми.
