It's quite surprising, because if I turn on the _output_ control for the microphone, the sound is indeed echoed to the output. Tested with a plugged-in microphone with: arecord from aplay-1.0.21-alt1, audacity-1.3.7-alt1, skype-2.1.0.81-alt1. Recording under 2.6.30-std-def-alt15 works.
