As per http://kt.zork.net/kernel-traffic/kt20030910_231.html#5 it would be
reasonable to get a field comparison with netplug
(http://www.red-bean.com/~bos/) wrt link detection reliability due do different
methods involved.

NB: could also be a 2.4/2.6 issue, handle with care.
