При обновлении выключается фон приглашения kdm. 
Это из-за следующего параметра: 
# Hold the X-server grabbed the whole time the greeter is visible. This 
# may be more secure, but it will disable any background and other 
# X-clients started from the Setup script. 
# Default is false 
GrabServer=false 
Написано, что по умолчанию он false, но на деле - true. Потому что когда он не 
указан, background не стартует.

я недавно обновлял kdmrc этим же методом (kde-settings-kdm-3.5.7-alt6)
У меня остался GrabServer=false
