При вызове не находятся драйвера. Они лежат в /usr/lib64/plplot*
а программа ищет их в /usr/lib/plplot*

Например,
[vv@tao-vp python]$ ./pythondemos.py

*** PLPLOT ERROR, ABORTING OPERATION ***
plInitDispatchTable: Could not open drivers directory, aborting operation
