Предлагаю переключить сборку с GTK+2 на GTK+3 (и поменять это в описании пакета). В Ubuntu 18.04 сейчас пользуюсь Geany с GTK+3, вроде бы все нормально, регрессий не заметил, а файловый диалог от GTK3 поприятнее + на HiDPI размер иконок нормальный, а не маленький.
