В стандартной установке Альт Рабочая Станция 8 в меню справа показываются недавно открытые документы, на них можно нажать, но ничего не произойдёт.

Причина - он ищет gvfs-open и не находит. Проблема известная, https://github.com/ubuntu-mate/mate-menu/pull/35 . Там же есть простой патч https://github.com/ubuntu-mate/mate-menu/commit/c99c67393a02ce649e6f8570da173b11be359842
