I was trying to install mate-default metapackage from synaptic.

Clean simply linux 10.1 installation.

The package atril-gtk must be removed first, because it conflicts with mate-document-viewer (atril-gtk is the same application, but it built without MATE dependencies). Unfortunately, this conflict should be resolved manually by removing the conflicting package.
