прадлагаю собирать dovecot-sasl, приложаны 2 патча. У меня оно работает с
настройками:

$ sudo dovecot -n

auth default:
  passdb:
    driver: pam
  userdb:
    driver: passwd
  socket:
    type: listen
    client:
      path: /var/spool/postfix/dovecot/auth-client
      mode: 432
      user: postfix
      group: postfix
[skip]
$ sudo postconf -n |grep smtpd_sasl
smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtpd_sasl_path = dovecot/auth-client
smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot

In -alt2, enabled build of dovecot plugin by default.
