When I use not a default GTK theme (Darkness), the color of message text is black. It is a bug in gtk_stext_insert function in gtkstext.c, but i can`t fix it. When you call function gtk_stext_insert and a pointer to GdkColor* fore=NULL, the color of text became black. Look with attention to function insert_text_property in gtkstext.c
