For example, in this excerpt from /usr/share/man/man5/magic.5.gz:

.BR \\*[Lt] ,
to specify that the value from the file must be less than the specified
value,
.BR \\*[Gt] ,
to specify that the value from the file must be greater than the specified
value,
.BR \\*[Am] ,
to specify that the value from the file must have set all of the bits
that are set in the specified value,
----------------------------

the sequences such as \\*[Lt] are not displayed.
These are symbols vital for understanding magic file format.
