In t7, after installing mate-session-1.6.1-alt1_3 , /etc/X11/wmsession.d/02Mate becomes the preferred (default) session started by "runwm default", but it is not usable, probably due to:

(Actually, I didn't want to install mate-session and make it the default one. It was a consequence of installing mate-document-viewer. I use Simply Linux with Xfce. Workaround: install atril-gtk instead of mate-document-viewer.)

BTW, xfce4-session does require the corresponding window manager, perhaps, mate-session should require its WM, too:
