Если архив больше 2Г, распаковать не можем с руганью:
cpio: standard input is closed: Value too large for defined data type

Решение - добавить в %build
%add_optflags -D _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64

Только после этого смог распаковать 9гиг лрна.

This bug was fixed in cpio-2.6-alt1 some time ago.

Workaround for old cpio:
cat large_file_over_2G |cpio --extract
