gxmessage-2.6.2-alt1 Currently, you cannot use the command "xmessage" and actually use the "gxmessage" program, although it is conceived as a compatible alternative to "xmessage". I suggest to make "xmessage" an alternative switchable betwee the traditional "xmessage" and "gxmessage".
IIRC from my last revisiting this very topic, *message programs were barely compatible beyond basic "throw up some ascii" (that said, gxmessage(1) mentions every xmessage(1) option). Whoever's using /usr/bin/xmessage shouldn't rely on any additional abilities, but then again, we might mildly provoke unsuspecting folks. xmessage is 17k, gxmessage is 52k, these two install and run along nicely, so frankly I'm still not inclined to rush in with alternatives. If it's ever conceived the other way around, please keep in mind kmessage: http://staff.science.uva.nl/~wijnhout/kmessage/index.html http://dir.filewatcher.com/d/Other/src/User%20Interface/Desktops/kmessage-0.9.5-3ark.src.rpm.32238.html (kde-3.5)
