Мандрива 2007 на этой машине работает нормально.

Увы, хозяин проблемной машины "не находит времени" конкретно поискать причину: 
повытаскивать платки из pci-слотов :(

Причина оказалась в плате видеозахвата Pinnacle Studio DC10+, чипсет ZORAN.
Убрали плату - заработало. 
С этой платой ни ALT 4.0 (Live), ни Knoppix (3.7) не работают,
виснут на "populating dev".
Мандрива, однако, работает ;)

Версию ALT Linux 4.0.2 пока не пробовали

С livecd проверять неудобно - хорошо бы иметь установленную обычным образом
систему, где можно провести следующие проверки:

1) Вписать в /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local строку:

blacklist zr36067

После этого, вероятнее всего, удастся загрузить систему обычным образом при
вставленной проблемной плате, поскольку её драйвер не будет загружаться
автоматически. В этом состоянии нужно снять вывод dmesg и lspci -vvnn.

2) Вставить проблемную плату, загрузить систему с опцией init=/sbin/sash (вместо
нормальной загрузки запустится shell даже без перемонтирования корня в rw, так
что зависание ничего не испортит), после чего попробовать выполнить

  dmesg -n8
  modprobe zr36067 debug=4

Если в результате система не зависнет (что маловероятно, но возможно), можно
сохранить сообщения ядра и перезагрузить систему для последующей загрузки в
обычном режиме:

  mount -o rw,remount /
  dmesg > /root/dmesg.log
  mount -o ro,remount /
  reboot -f

В случае зависания придётся фотографировать/переписывать отладочные сообщения с
экрана.

Кроме того, имеет смысл попробовать вставить эту плату в другую машину, чтобы
определить, связано ли зависание с особенностями именно этой машины (чипсет,
BIOS, ...).

Не удалось. Загрузка застряла на... sound.r* ... что-то вроде этого.
Только полностью вынув плату загрузил Альт.
