Соответственно, устройство не работает.

Как ни странно, но после перезагрузки заработало на 2.6.18-alt12. Т.к. до этого
я загружал модули вручную, все нужные, возможно, не подгрузились. 
$ lsmod | grep ath

При использовании 2.6.24-std-def-alt4 ничего не получается (ни вручную, ни
автоматом).

У меня есть подозрение, что вам могут мешать модули ath5k, которые есть в 2.6.24
ядре. Поэтому советую сначала их заблеклистить, добавив в
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist строку blacklist ath5k
