После аварийного выхода (system shutdown) firefox-3.0.1-alt1 при перезапуске восстанавливает все вкладки, ничего не спрашивая. Можно ли как-то отключить такой режим - мне вовсе не надо, чтобы он открывал старые вкладки?

Можно. Это поведение отключается:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionstore.enabled

По умолчанию сохранение сессий включено.
