xcf - родной файл форматов для GIMP
файл /usr/share/applications/gimp.desktop
не содержит в MimeType типа файлов xcf для KDE.

т.е. если есть xcf файл KDE не знает чем его открыть.

kdelibs-3.5.10-alt1

какое отношение к ним имеет gimp?

В данном случае никакого.

хотя о чем это мы
$ rpmquery -f /usr/share/mimelnk/image/x-xcf-gimp.desktop
kdelibs-3.5.10-alt1

а должен быть x-xcf.desktop с MimeType=image/x-xcf внутри
