В данном случае это ошибка в man-странице. В gitglossary(7) написано:

Fetching a branch means to get the branch\'s head ref from a remote repository

Цитирую groff(7):

\'     The acute accent .; same as \(aa.  Unescaped: apostrophe

Для notes to self есть knotes.

Ну можно считать, чтоя просто вынес баг, описанный в комменте, в отдельный багрепорт, а проверить его актуальность ещё не успел.
