Установка default kernel image как failsafe не приводит к желаемому результату: в /etc/lilo.conf остаётся default=ALTLinux

Воспроизвел в экспертном интерфейсе, в простом - все работает правильно.

А lilo.conf можно поглядеть?

Так и не осознал, была ли проблема.
Видимо, alterator-lilo следует признать заброшенным.
