It would be really practical to have a mini netinstall iso for ALT Linux, many major distributions offer such mini netinstall iso. User can download the base system and requried DE environment accordingly, having DVD iso is ok but netinstall iso will be a good addition.

BTW it will require unsetting "automatic" in syslinux/isolinux configuration.

I'm working on it within mkimage-profiles framework:
http://www.altlinux.org/Mkimage/Profiles/next

So far it's quite straightforward to produce an ISO having only stage1
or stage1+stage2 (without package base itself), need to re-deploy the
network installation testing stand...

It's done to some extent, at least there's an image to install an x86_64 OpenVZ server: http://ftp.linux.kiev.ua/pub/Linux/ALT/people/mike/iso/mkimage-profiles/netinst/propagator-20111118-x86_64.iso [17M]

I'm slowly thinking through generalization however...

Уже давно собираем образы только со stage1 с установкой по сети одним из четырёх методов (nfs, cifs, http, ftp):

В образе два ядра, что позволяет загружать все текущие регулярки, главное выбрать правильное ядро. Также нужно выбрать правильно, что загружать: altinst, live или rescue. Поддерживается загрузка как iso целиком, так и только загрузка сквоша.
