mate-settings-daemon при обнаружении проблемы в настройках пытается сообщить об этом пользователю через libnotify, где и умирает с ошибкой:
(сообщение неточное)
(mate-settings-daemon:3743): libnotify-WARNING **: you must call notify_init() before showing
libnotify:ERROR:notification.c:514:notify_notification_show: code should not be reached
