iftop -i eth0 -- грузит табличку, а потом отваливается с сообщением "ookup of
user "_iftop" failed"

[root@iph bloodmary]# rpm -qa | grep iftop
iftop-0.16-alt2

strace выдает хорошо знакомую строку -- open("/proc/sys/kernel/ngroups_max",
O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

А починить?

Local misconfiguration (user _iftop is missing), try
# apt-get reinstall iftop

не отработали установочные скрипты :(
по причине полного бардака на данной машине, причины невыяснимы
